Tribute to Aunty Agnes, my friend, my sister by Helena Gaisie Stephens (Ghana)

Divine wisdom, Intending to detain us some time on earth, Has done well to cover with a veil the prospect of the life to come; For if our sight could clearly distinguish the opposite bank, Who would remain on this tempestuous coast of time. - Madame Anne-Louise-Germaine de Stael I called you “Aunty Agnes,” and you had your unique way of calling my “Helena” name. I have a lot of unanswered questions. A few days before you died, I had a long chat with you on the phone from the US, while you were in the hospital. I had promised that I would come over to London to see you just the Tuesday, the 23rd, after my birthday in Ghana. All I was asking for, Aunty Agnes, was to sit with you, hold your hand while we talk, to strengthen and encourage you that there was still a lot to live for. You did not grant me that chance. You passed on, on Friday. I am sad. I am broken-hearted. I am shattered. And why you chose to, and the significance of you dying on my 60th birthday is another question I am grappling with. You were such a sweet, loving and kind hearted lady. You gave generously the love and smiles which you did not get much of yourself. You always had a little something for somebody…when you had returned from a journey, was travelling or heard somebody going to somebody you know. The rice cooker you sent me through Kweku is still in its box. I take consolation in the above quote, and leave you to take your deserved rest. Take a good fill of the glory, love, grace and joy that is awaiting you in paradise. My dear Auntie Agnes, until we meet again… Sleep on, beloved, sleep on and take thy rest, Lay down thy head upon thy Saviour’s breast; We love thee well, but Jesus loves thee best;— Good-night, Good-night, Good-night!
